CARMEL BY THE SEA, CALIFORNIA

This scenic house and garden remodel rests sheltered among stoic cypress trees on the edge of the pacific. Revealing the coastal shoreline comes in stages as the front yard introduces a layering of new and old. A precision crafted timber screen provide the backdrop for a boulder scheme that both shelters and supports the coastal flora. The entrance is through a private garden courtyard — a welcome repose and tranquil micro climate along this wind swept coast. Free of the cold winds and direct sea spray this space offered us grounds to explore a greater horticultural variety. The back yard is serene and is accented by sculptural boulders that echo the shores existing granitic coastal bedrock. Warm tones of the rock are picked up in the linear slab paving, fire pit and timber details, giving equal nod to the preserved traditional brick slump walls that continue to frame sections of the garden.
